About Us
The Building Department is responsible for permitting, inspecting, enforcing, informing, collecting, and tracking all aspects of the building permit process. This newly created department was established January 1, 2001 as part of the Martin County Board of Commissioners strategic objective to obtain an efficient and productive organization.
We collect over $1,500,000 annually in permit fees, and are responsible for enforcing most of the Martin County Codes and Ordinances. We also enforce the regulation of all licensed contractors. The Martin County Building Department has received a Class 2-Superior rating from the Insurance Services Organization. This places the department among the top building permit, plan review, and inspection programs nationwide.
Martin County was one of the first counties in Florida to adopt mandatory hurricane shutter requirements for all new construction. Additionally, we have also adopted the stringent design requirements of ASCE 7-98 for 130/140 M.P.H. wind loads countywide.
